FOREX-Euro pressured vs dollar on Greek debt woes

The euro slipped on Thursday, hovering near a 6 1/2-month low against the dollar as investors remained wary on concerns over heavily indebted smaller euro zone countries such as Greece and Portugal.

The dollar gained support after Kansas City Fed President Thomas Hoenig dissented from the Fed's pledge to keep rates low "for an extended period", bolstering the market's view that rates may start to rise later in the year. >>

 

 

Yen falls sharply after S&P cuts outlook on Japan

The yen made sudden sharp falls against the dollar and the euro on Tuesday after Standard & Poor's said it had cut its outlook on Japan's AA long-term sovereign debt rating to negative from stable. >>

Euro extends losses, hits 5-mth low vs dollar

The euro EUR= fell as low as $1.4058 according to Reuters data, its weakest since mid-August.

Losses accelerated after a flash reading of the euro zone purchasing manager's index showed a composite reading of 53.6 in January. This compared with expectations for a rise to 54.5, and suggested that the pace of the region's economic recovery may be slowing. >>

The euro hit five-month lows against the dollar and sterling on Wednesday as the single European currency's decisive break under a key support level prompted widespread selling.

The dollar rose across the board, boosted by a slide in commodity currencies on reports that some Chinese banks have been instructed to curb lending -- a move that may slow the China's economic recovery. The euro fell as low as $1.4166, its weakest since mid-August, after breaking through its 200-day moving average around $1.4295, which had been considered a key support level. Selling accelerated after stop-loss orders were triggered under that level, traders said. >>
